Mike Ryan’s 36-year career at Angelo State University (1970–2006) was marked by his steadfast dedication to promoting ASU’s identity and spirit, and his enduring love for Tuffy and Scooter. Beginning in the Journalism Department, Ryan served as the advisor for the Ram Page newspaper and Rambouillet yearbook, shaping student voices and publications that celebrated ASU’s traditions. His deep understanding of the importance of school spirit led to his significant role in advancing the university's branding through its mascots.
In 1976, Ryan transitioned to serve as Dr. Lloyd Vincent’s right-hand man, leading the Public Relations Office. Under his guidance, Tuffy and Scooter became central figures in the promotion of ASU pride, gracing marketing materials, memorabilia, and even athletic uniforms. Ryan’s efforts helped solidify their role as enduring symbols of Ram spirit during a transformative period for the university. His personal affinity for Tuffy and Scooter drove his work, ensuring they were prominently featured in ASU’s outreach and identity.
After Dr. Vincent's passing in 1994, Ryan stepped in as interim president, providing steady leadership during a time of transition until Dr. James Hindman was appointed. Following this, he served as Vice President for University Relations, working tirelessly to promote ASU's legacy and values. He retired in 2006, leaving behind a legacy of passion and commitment to the institution.

His personal collection of Tuffy and Scooter memorabilia reflects his deep connection to ASU’s mascots and their role in fostering school spirit. He was instrumental in preserving their history and contributed invaluable insights to filling the gaps in Tuffy's timeline. Mike Ryan’s dedication ensured that Tuffy and Scooter remain iconic symbols of ASU, inspiring pride and connection across generations.
